Introduction

A strange roar, hum or pulsing vibration in the night sky does not automatically point to an unknown aerial phenomenon. One of the most useful first checks is whether aircraft activity matches the time, direction and character of the sound. Public flight-tracking tools have made this easier than ever, but they are often misunderstood. People sometimes search a tracking app, see nothing obvious, and conclude that the noise came from something unidentifiable. In reality, many ordinary flights are difficult to spot, delayed on public feeds, hidden by coverage gaps or intentionally absent from consumer tracking services.

Flight Checks illustration 1 A basic flight-check routine cannot explain every unusual sound, but it can eliminate a large number of false mysteries. The goal is not to prove that every report has a conventional explanation. It is to avoid treating an aircraft noise as unexplained before the most obvious aviation possibilities have been examined.

What to Note Before Checking Flight Activity

The quality of a flight-track check depends on the quality of the observation. Many failed identifications happen because the listener remembers only a vague impression of “a strange noise sometime after dark”.

Before opening a tracking site, note as much as possible:

  • Exact time, preferably to the minute.
  • Approximate direction of the sound.
  • Whether the sound seemed stationary, moving or circling.
  • Weather conditions, especially low cloud, fog or temperature inversions.
  • Duration of the sound.
  • Whether any lights were visible.
  • Whether the noise was a steady hum, deep rumble, pulsing beat or sharp mechanical sound.

These details matter because aircraft sounds often arrive from a different direction than expected. Sound can be refracted by atmospheric conditions, reflected from cloud layers or carried over surprisingly long distances. A cargo aircraft many kilometres away may sound closer than it is, while a helicopter operating nearby may seem farther away because terrain blocks direct sound paths.

A useful habit is to compare the reported time against multiple flight-tracking sources rather than relying on a single app. Different services use different data feeds and filtering policies. What appears missing on one platform may appear normally on another.

A Practical Flight-Check Routine

When investigating an unusual sky sound, a simple sequence works better than immediately searching for exotic explanations.

  1. Check major flight-tracking services for the reported time and location.
  2. Look for aircraft within a wide radius, not only directly overhead. Low-frequency engine noise can travel much farther than many people expect.
  3. Review flight history if available. Some sounds come from aircraft that passed several minutes earlier.
  4. Check airports, military bases and helicopter routes in the wider region.
  5. Look for circling patterns, holding patterns or training flights. These can create repetitive sounds that seem abnormal.
  6. Compare aircraft type with the reported sound.

Large jets often produce sustained rumbles. Helicopters commonly generate rhythmic beating or pulsing. Turboprops may create fluctuating droning tones.

  1. Check local aviation discussions and spotter communities to see whether others identified the same activity.

This approach often reveals that a supposedly mysterious sound coincided with a cargo departure, military exercise, medical helicopter transit or aircraft holding pattern.

Why Some Flights Are Easy to Miss

One of the biggest mistakes in UFO-noise discussions is assuming that public tracking services display every aircraft in the sky. They do not.

Most modern flight-tracking systems rely heavily on ADS-B, short for Automatic Dependent Surveillance–Broadcast. Aircraft equipped with ADS-B transmit position, altitude and identification data that can be received by ground stations and displayed on public maps. [Wikipedia]WikipediaAutomatic Dependent Surveillance–BroadcastAutomatic Dependent Surveillance–Broadcast

However, several factors can prevent a flight from appearing.

Coverage Gaps

Flight-tracking websites depend on networks of receivers. If an aircraft is flying low, behind terrain or outside receiver coverage, its track may be incomplete or absent. Researchers studying ADS-B networks have repeatedly noted that coverage varies significantly by geography and sensor placement. [arXiv]arxiv.orgarXivOpenSky Report 2025: Improving Crowdsourced Flight Trajectories with ADS-C DataMay 1, 2025…Published: May 1, 2025

This is especially relevant for:

  • Low-flying helicopters. [facebook.com]facebook.comNot all aircraft are required to have ADS-B. Quite common for helicopters & crop dusters not to show up.Read more…
  • Aircraft in mountainous regions.
  • Flights over remote areas.
  • Aircraft operating close to the ground during approach or departure.

A listener may hear the aircraft clearly while the tracking network receives little or no usable position data.

Helicopters Frequently Create Confusion

Helicopters are involved in a disproportionate number of “mystery sound” reports because they often operate at lower altitudes and may not appear consistently on public trackers.

Aviation enthusiasts regularly report seeing or hearing helicopters that do not appear on consumer flight-tracking applications. Discussions among pilots and ADS-B users point to gaps in coverage, equipment differences and filtering practices as common reasons. Medical, police, news and utility helicopters may also use tracking arrangements that differ from scheduled airline traffic.

Military Flights May Be Missing or Incomplete

Military activity is one of the most common triggers for UFO-noise speculation.

Training exercises, tanker operations, surveillance flights and helicopter manoeuvres often produce unusual acoustic effects because they occur at unusual hours or outside familiar airline routes. Yet military aircraft are among the least reliable targets on public tracking systems.

Some military aircraft operate with transponders disabled, use restricted broadcasting practices or are filtered from certain public displays. The FAA has specific provisions allowing defence aircraft to disable ADS-B transmissions under approved circumstances, and military operators may use procedures that reduce public visibility. [Aviation Tech Today]aviationtoday.comnew rule allows military aircraft turn ads b transmissions offAviation Tech TodayNew Rule Allows Military Aircraft to Turn Off ADS-B…Jul 23, 2019 — Under the FAA's new ADS-B off rule, defense airc…

This creates an important distinction: a missing flight track is not evidence of an unidentified object. It may simply indicate that the aircraft was not publicly visible on the service being checked.

Public Trackers Do Not Show the Same Sky

Many people assume that all flight-tracking websites draw from the same information. In practice, they differ substantially.

Some platforms prioritise commercial airline traffic. Others display a broader range of ADS-B and multilateration data. Multilateration, often abbreviated MLAT, estimates aircraft positions by comparing signal arrival times at multiple receivers and can reveal aircraft that lack full ADS-B position broadcasts. Because services apply different filtering rules, an aircraft hidden on one site may be visible on another. Aviation forums contain many examples of military, police or government aircraft appearing on one tracker while remaining absent on another. For investigators trying to identify a strange sound, comparing multiple sources is often more informative than treating a single app as definitive.

Privacy, Filtering and Blocked Aircraft

Another source of confusion is the assumption that flight-tracking data are completely open.

In reality, aviation authorities and tracking providers have long operated privacy and blocking systems. In the United States, programmes such as Limiting Aircraft Data Displayed (LADD) and Privacy ICAO Address arrangements allow eligible operators to reduce public visibility of certain aircraft information. High-profile private aircraft, government flights and some specialised operations may therefore appear differently across tracking services.

This does not mean aircraft become invisible to air traffic control. It means public users may receive only partial information or no information at all.

For UFO-noise investigations, the practical lesson is simple: an empty tracking screen is not proof that no aircraft were present.

When Flight Checks Solve the Mystery

A large share of reported sky sounds become less mysterious once flight activity is examined carefully.

Typical examples include:

  • Cargo aircraft climbing at night and producing a prolonged low-frequency roar.
  • Military tankers flying racetrack holding patterns that create recurring engine noise.
  • Helicopters conducting search, rescue or police operations beyond visual range.
  • Aircraft approaching through cloud layers that hide navigation lights until the final stages of flight.
  • Training flights repeating the same route and creating the impression of hovering activity.

In many cases, witnesses focus on the absence of visible aircraft rather than on the sound itself. Yet visibility and audibility are affected by different physical conditions. A cloud-hidden aircraft may be acoustically obvious while remaining visually undetectable.

Limits of Public Flight Tracking

Flight checks are valuable, but they are not perfect.

Several limitations remain:

  • Not all aircraft transmit publicly visible tracking data.
  • Coverage can fail at low altitude.
  • Historical playback may be incomplete.
  • Military and government operations may be filtered.
  • Timing errors in witness recollections can shift the search window.
  • Sound propagation can make an aircraft seem much closer or farther away than it really is.

For that reason, flight tracking should be treated as a screening tool rather than a final verdict. A positive match can strongly suggest an ordinary aviation explanation. A negative result simply means more investigation is needed.

The most reliable approach is to combine witness notes, weather conditions, aircraft databases and multiple tracking sources before deciding that a strange sky sound truly lacks a conventional explanation. In the study of UFO noises, that small verification step often separates a genuine mystery from an ordinary aircraft heard under unusual conditions.
